IF THE line-ups for festivals such as V and R?Ôeading strike you as a tad tame and lacking in metallic properties, then a trip to Bloodstock is in order. Now in it's fourth year, Derby's annual metal jamboree has become the festival for the British metalhead wanting to bang their head without hopping across the channel, boasting a magnificently heavy line up across it's two stages.

Saturday morning brings 12 full hours of metal madness, including the metalcore bounce of PANIC CELL(KKK) and Swiss goth-metallers EDENBRIDGE(KKKK). GUTWORM(KKKK) win the medal for heaviest band of the weekend hands down thanks to their spastic death metal sound and a supremely violent wall of death, before doomsters THE PROPHECY(KKKK) slow things right down.

For all their efforts though, nobody can top EVERGREY(KKKKK) on as fine form as this and by the time th
ey finish there isn't a soul in the room not under their spell. Band of the weekend, no question. Closely followed by PRIMAL FEAR(KKKKK). It's hard to imagine any band so authentically close to 'Painkiller'-era Priest not playing a blinder, and when armed with classic tunes like 'Metal Is Forever' it's practically a legal requirement. An unfortunate mix castrates SONATA ARCTICA's(KKK) power somewhat, although songs like 'Fullmoon' still hit the spot. No such problems for CHILDREN OF BODOM(KKKKK) however, who's perfect rock and roll fuelled power metal provides a final fix, with songs like 'Deadnight Warrior' providing Alexi Laiho the perfect opportunity to strike every guitar pose under the sun.
